Canadian Cyber-Security Strategy

Following DefCon, the largest hacker convention in the United States, Canada launched its second annual IT security convention, “SecTor”. While the Canadian conference attracts a variety of people, many attendees and speakers were security professionals and well-intentioned hackers who seek out and pinpoint the internal vulnerabilities of the companies they work for.

At SecTor, the RCMP announced initial details of a new national cyber-security strategy aimed at protecting Canadian infrastructure and identities. The strategy will focus on a number of priorities such as: the evolution of cyber crime for profit, the protection of critical cyber infrastructure and the convergence of technological and physical security. In particular, the strategy will focus on identity theft, since the RCMP believes there needs to be better definition of and protection from identity theft through legislation.

One aspect of the development of the strategy will be the partnering of public and private sectors by collaboration between Public Safety Canada with telecommunications and technology corporations such as Bell Canada and Microsoft.

The RCMP has said that all of the remaining strategic details will emerge in the next few months.
