On July 31, 2015, Health Canada’s Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD) announced new labelling requirements for certain homoeopathic products that are regulated under Canada’s Natural Health Products Regulations.  Labelling of homoeopathic nosodes and homoeopathic cough, cold and flu products are affected by this change.

Under the new labelling requirements, all homoeopathic nosode product labels must now include the statement:

This product is neither a vaccine nor an alternative to vaccination. This product has not been proven to prevent infection. Health Canada does not recommend its use in children and advises that your child receive all routine vaccinations.

License holders for nosode products have been asked to introduce the new statement by January 2016.

In addition, NNHPD also announced that it will not approve specific health claims on homoeopathic products for cough, cold and flu for children aged 12 years and under, unless those claims are supported by scientific evidence.  The NNHPD has amended its Guidance Document “Evidence for Homeopathic Medicines” and the monograph for homeopathic medicines accordingly.
