The Nevada State Board of Pharmacy has begun cracking down on online pharmacies. In its first case, the manager of Nevada based Prescriptiononline.com was recently fined $200,000 (U.S.). The investigation began after a complaint was registered against the company. A red flag was raised when it was revealed that about 90% of the prescriptions being filled were for painkillers. At an average pharmacy, the amount is only about 15%. To add to the Board's concern, users of the website did not have to see a doctor in person for a prescription. Diagnoses were made by a doctor over the phone. The general counsel for the Board commented that this is probably the first of many investigations of Internet pharmacies to come.
