The Ontario government is considering legislation to strengthen online consumer protection. The Minister of Consumer and Business Services ("Ministry") announced the government's intentions at a recent public forum on Internet fraud. The Minister said new legislation would require disclosure of a physical address and would strengthen enforcement and penalties for Internet scams. The Minister said tougher disclosure rules would let consumers know exactly whom they are dealing with. A government awareness campaign would focus on encouraging people to use common sense to avoid being defrauded online and on advising consumers what resources are available if they become victims of online fraud. The Ministry web site will be used to post case studies and examples of popular scams. It will also allow consumers to report suspected scams. Earlier this year, the Ministry conducted a "surf and sweep" operation, looking for online scams. A number of companies are facing charges in Ontario courts as a result of this investigation.
