The province of British Columbia is proposing new consumer protection legislation in an attempt to combine and replace seven separate statutes that contain consumer protection laws. The proposed legislation will remove duplications and inconsistencies, simplify consumer protection, create enforcement terms that are similar for breaches that occur across industries, and deal with new areas of consumer protection. The proposed legislation consists of new provisions that address Internet sales contracts. The Internet sales contract provisions are consistent with the current legislation in other parts of Canada to ensure that the same rules govern regardless of where the vendor is located in Canada.
