The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) has announced that it will no longer reserve dot.ca Internet domain names of Canadian municipalities. The predecessor to CIRA, the University of British Columbia's Department of Computer Science, which had been responsible for managing Canada's dot.ca Internet domain name registry from 1987 to 2000, began reserving municipal names in 1987. CIRA assumed this management responsibility in December 2000 and continued to reserve municipal names. These names will be released for registration on a first-come-first-served basis as of March 20, 2003.
