The global Internet addressing authority, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ("ICANN"), has voted to allow the Internet Society to manage the operation of the registry for the ".org" top-level domain. The Internet Society, a group of computer professionals based in Virginia, has established a new organization called the Public Interest Registry to be the registry operator. The current ".org" manager, VeriSign Inc. will transfer the domain at the end of 2002 as part of a deal with ICANN to manage the domain ".com".
