The Ontario Privacy Commissioner, Ann Cavoukian, has urged companies to review their policies and procedures for the handling and destruction of personal information records. This recommendation comes in the wake of the unintentional release of the highly sensitive health information of an Ontario woman. The woman's medical records were circulated on the back of a real estate company's flyers which were distributed to numerous Toronto-area homes. The records were said to have been placed for recycling and ended up in a printer's shop. In particular, the Commissioner stated:
"Privacy is a business issue. Not only is there a liability risk, but a huge risk to reputation. Smart businesses have strong policies that protect their clients' privacy – it's just good business, and customers are demanding it."
