Under a recent settlement of their lawsuit, Redback Networks will license telephone industry competitor Nortel Network's patented technology for an undisclosed amount. This ends the litigation commenced nearly 2 years ago when Redback sued to invalidate 5 U.S. patents owned by Nortel. Nortel counterclaimed for patent infringement. The dispute concerned technology for digital data transmission in telephone networks, including that disclosed in U.S. Patent Serial No. 4,667,324. In rapid succession since September 2002, Nortel has now settled 3 U.S. patent infringement suits. The other two parties were fellow competitors in the network equipment industry, namely Ciena Corporation and Extreme Networks.
