On June 18, 2026, from 12 -1 pm ET, Gervas Wall and Gary Daniel will speak at CAN-TECH's AI Committee meeting about two landmark Canadian cases at the intersection of artificial intelligence and intellectual property law.

Gervas Wall will discuss Stephen L. Thaler v. Attorney General of Canada (T-4928-25), an ongoing Federal Court appeal concerning whether an AI system can be named as an inventor on a patent application. Gervas serves as counsel for Dr. Thaler.

Gary Daniel will discuss Samuelson-Glushko Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC) v. Sahni (T-1717-24), a case examining whether an AI system can be recognized as an author under the Copyright Act. Gary serves as counsel for Mr. Sahni.

The session will be moderated by Maya Medeiros and Aarani Stoneham.
