On June 23, 2025, in Bartz v. Anthropic PBC, C 24-05417 WHA (N.D.Ca.), the United States District Court for the Northern District of California (the Court) held that Anthropic PBC’s (Anthropic’s) use of legally obtained works to train its artificial intelligence (AI) models was “transformative” and constituted fair use under the Copyright Act (the Act). However, this did not extend to Anthropic’s use of pirated copies for such training, which was not protected under fair use.

Marrand Auto Inc., 2025 FC 1105, dismissing an appeal by Marrand Auto Inc. (the Defendant) of a previous decision granting leave to Toyota Canada Inc. et al. (collectively, Toyota) to amend its statement of claim regarding a limited subset of allegations under the Trademarks Act (the Act) for the sale of grey market goods.

On June 17, 2025, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the United Kingdom' Information Commissioner (collectively, the Commissioners) released the findings of their joint investigation into the October 2023 global data breach at 23andMe, a genetic testing company. The investigation found that 23andMe failed to implement sufficient security measures to protect the personal information of its customers, including nearly 320,000 Canadians.

On June 9, 2025, the Commissioner of Patents (the Commissioner) issued a decision refusing Canadian Patent Application No. 3,137,161 (the 161 Application) for a food container and enhanced signalling device, developed by the artificial intelligence (AI) system “DABUS”. The 161 Application referred to DABUS as the “inventor” of the application’s subject matter and DABUS’s creator and owner, Stephen L. Thaler (Thaler), as the applicant and DABUS’s legal representative.
