Imtiaz Karamat is an associate lawyer of the firm. He practises in the areas of intellectual property, information technology, cybersecurity, technology contracting, and privacy law.
Practice Areas
Imtiaz has a multifaceted practice that covers a range of intellectual property and information technology matters, including IP commercialization, technology contracting, privacy, cybersecurity, and regulatory law. He assists both startups and established businesses with commercial transactions and maintaining compliance with privacy requirements. He is also a Certified Information Privacy Professional for Canada (CIPP/C).
Imtiaz attended Osgoode Hall Law School where he was involved in its Intellectual Property Law & Technology Program. His involvement in the program culminated in an internship with a major pharmaceutical company, where he worked with in-house counsel on regulatory and privacy matters.
Prior to practicing law, Imtiaz completed his Master of Science degree in Medical Sciences at McMaster University. As a graduate student, he focused on neuroimmunology and was awarded an Ontario Graduate Fellowship for his thesis on the immune system's role in stress-induced brain function and behaviour.
Imtiaz joined DWW as a summer student in 2019 and completed his articles with the firm in 2021.

On August 27, 2025, Imtiaz Karamat will speak in a program titled "Understanding Influencer Agreements” as part of the Ontario Bar Association’s new Speakers Bureau series, which is aimed to equip rising influencers and content creators to build their online brand while avoiding legal pitfalls.
Imtiaz will join Yonida Koukio of Oziel Law to discuss common types of contracts that influencers may enter and key considerations for influencers to keep in mind when in these circumstances.
On May 29, 2025, Imtiaz Karamat will speak on a panel titled "EDI Through the Ages: Are we there yet?" at the Canadian Bar Association IP Day 2025 Conference in Ottawa, Ontario.
Imtiaz will join an intergenerational panel to engage in roundtable discussion on changes in Equity Diversity & Inclusion (“EDI”) in the workplace over the recent decades, including addressing the shifting landscape through the years, the current state of EDI, and the future of EDI initiatives.
On October 7, 2024, DWW Associate M. Imtiaz Karamat will moderate the panel “It’s Not a Bird or a Plane – Regulating the Legal Landscape of Drones” at the 2024 Canadian Technology Law Association Fall Conference.
Imtiaz and a panel of experts will discuss how drones are revolutionizing business practices across industries and the current legal landscape for this technology in Canada. This program will also delve into how legislative frameworks are evolving to regulate this new frontier.
